A new type of color picker
Class Project | 2011 | Interaction Design
Tony Scauzillo-Golden formed the Spective Color group with HCDE students to take a user-centered design approach to color selection systems. This group project aimed to improve the usability of color selection systems by providing users with a clear structure that weighs colors equally and makes it fast and easy to pick the right color for their project.
My role in this group was to help create a user research kit, design user interfaces, and prepare, and deliver a presentation for the Matt Shobe Award in Spring 2011.
Tony Scauzillo-Golden presented this idea at the HCDE Open House in Winter 2011. In the Spring of 2011, he formed a team of three undergraduates to assist him in the development idea. The artifacts on this page are my ideas and contributions to the Spective Colour System.
Selecting colors
Problem
Across the industry, there is not a clear standard in color selection user interfaces. Apple has five different native color selectors. Similarly, Microsoft and Adobe have a wide variety of different color selectors. All of these color selectors differ from one another across multiple platforms and applications. Picking the right color is a challenge and is very time-consuming because of all the inconsistencies in portraying and structuring colors
Objective
Create an organized color system that reduces the cognitive memory load on users while simplifying the selection process. Write a UCD paper and present findings to the Shobe Award committee in hopes of a $10,000 grant.
