Modernizing Data Studio’s Model Visualization

Model Studio is a complete interaction redesign project aimed at transforming the company’s core financial model interface. The existing model interface was complex and inconsistent, requiring a forensic team to trace and manage each client’s custom implementation. The redesign introduced a structured and intuitive horizontal "blades-style" interface inspired by Sankey diagrams, providing a clear visualization of how money flows between layers and categories.
PROBLEM & OPPORTUNITY
The existing financial modeler was a highly complex, canvas-style interface that made it nearly impossible for users to trace financial flows, requiring forensic-level effort to understand and modify models. Each customer had a custom implementation, creating inconsistencies, audit challenges, and usability issues. The opportunity was to introduce a standardized, structured interface that made financial allocations clear, reproducible, and easy to navigate.

I partnered closely with the EM and lead engineer to adapt the Sankey-diagram to fit our mental model. I designed the interactions and visual design for viewing, editing, and creating new connections.
KEY OUTCOMES & RESULTS
Increased Usability & Efficiency – Users could now easily trace allocation flows, reducing time spent troubleshooting financial models.
Improved Auditability – A structured allocation system ensured compliance and made financial models easier to verify.
Better Visualization of Financial Flow – Inspired by Sankey diagrams, the new interface visually represented how money moves between categories, providing immediate clarity.
SOLUTION
A horizontal-scrolling, origami-folding interface replaced the cluttered canvas model, using a Sankey-inspired visualization to make allocation flows intuitive. This allowed users to see financial movements at a glance, identify discrepancies, and manage allocations more effectively. By integrating real-time feedback, validation tools, and a structured framework, the redesign transformed financial modeling from a forensic challenge into a seamless, user-friendly experience.
